What is the pressure rating of PE pipes?

The Yongte PE pipe production line is a complete set of automated equipment specifically designed for the production of PE pipes in various specifications. It is capable of supporting extrusion production of PE pipes across the full pressure rating range from PN8 to PN25, and allows for the adjustment of mold parameters according to specific requirements to produce finished pipe products with corresponding SDR specifications. This equipment is widely used to meet pipe production and processing needs in various application fields, including municipal water supply, gas transmission, and agricultural irrigation.

The pressure rating of PE pipes refers to the rated working pressure that PE pipes can withstand, typically denoted by the symbol PN. Different pressure ratings correspond to distinct specification parameters and applicable scenarios; common PE pipe pressure ratings include PN8, PN10, PN16, PN20, and PN25.

PE Pipe Pressure Ratings: PN8 / PN10 / PN16 / PN20 / PN25 – Description

PN stands for Nominal Pressure, expressed in bars (bar), and denotes the maximum allowable long-term operating pressure of the piping material at 20 °C. The most commonly used raw materials for PE piping are PE100 (the most prevalent) and PE80; the following explanation uses PE100 as an example.

meaning

· PN8: Nominal pressure 8 bar (0.8 MPa)

· PN10: Nominal pressure 10 bar (1.0 MPa)

· PN16: Nominal pressure 16 bar (1.6 MPa)

· PN20: Nominal pressure 20 bar (2.0 MPa)

· PN25: Nominal pressure 25 bar (2.5 MPa)

PE100 corresponds to SDR

The wall thickness of PE pipes varies depending on their pressure rating; the higher the pressure rating, the greater the pipe wall thickness, which in turn enhances its pressure resistance capability, though this also increases the project cost. In practical engineering applications, it is essential to select the appropriate pressure rating of PE pipes based on the project's hydraulic requirements and operating environment.

✅ The higher the pressure → the thicker the wall thickness for the same outer diameter, and the lower the SDR value. SDR = Outer Diameter / Wall Thickness, i.e., outer diameter divided by wall thickness.

Note: When the temperature exceeds 20 °C, the allowable working pressure of the PE pipe shall be multiplied by a temperature reduction factor. For example, when used at 40 °C, its pressure rating will significantly decrease.

Brief Overview of Application Scenarios

1. PN8 (SDR21): Suitable for low-pressure water supply, agricultural irrigation, and non-pressurized sewage discharge applications where the pressure resistance requirements for pipelines are relatively low. Due to its relatively thin wall thickness and reduced material consumption, this grade meets basic operational requirements while offering the most cost-effective solution, making it the lowest-cost option.

2. PN10 (SDR17): Widely used in municipal water supply projects and residential community water distribution networks. This pressure rating strikes an optimal balance between pressure resistance and economic efficiency; it not only meets the operating pressure requirements of conventional water supply systems but also offers favorable installation and construction advantages. Consequently, it has become one of the most commonly adopted specifications in practical engineering applications.

3. PN16 (SDR11): Suitable for high-rise building water supply systems and water distribution networks requiring high pressure ratings. The higher pressure rating ensures that the piping system can operate safely even under conditions of high water pressure or water hammer effects. Additionally, many gas pipelines also utilize the SDR11 specification to meet the stringent requirements for pressure resistance and safety factors in gas transmission systems.

4. PN20 (SDR9): Primarily used in industrial high-pressure water supply systems and short-distance high-pressure transmission applications. This pressure class features an increased pipe wall thickness, enabling it to withstand higher operating pressures. It is therefore well-suited for industrial applications with stringent pressure requirements, offering significant advantages in scenarios demanding high pressure and stable fluid transport.

5. PN25 (SDR7.4): Designed for high-pressure service conditions, this pipe features a relatively thick wall thickness, providing exceptional pressure resistance. Due to higher material costs and greater construction challenges—which significantly increase project costs—this grade is typically employed for small-diameter piping systems, where it plays an irreplaceable role in specific high-pressure application scenarios.
